over and such [Jan. 25th, 2010|08:33 pm]
See, look. I'm not dead; apparently my online friends think I am... No, it is simply that as a result of family commitments, and half my evening being eaten by the big chomping commuting monster, I've not felt particularly inclined to make any effort with blogs, or, well, humans.

However, this has allowed a lot of time for me to do very little between the times I'm doing too much. That sentence doesn't appear to make any sense now I'm rereading it. I assure you, it did when I formulated it. This is a result of having monday-night-tiredness type illness.

Er, yes, clearly this entry isn't happening. Perhaps I'll be more lucid tomorrow.

What are your least favorite book and movie genres? Are you willing to make exceptions? Do you ever feel left out of social events/discussions owing to atypical taste in movies/books?

do you feel left out of event/discussion owing to atypical taste in movies?

GOD YES! I'm kind of varied in my choice of genre, it's more my choice of era that separates me. I by far more enjoy movies from 1920 - 1960 than anything later. Primarily because they have vastly superior characterisations and plot lines in comparison to anything that's been released lately. Of course there are some exceptions, some contemporary films are very good, however they are marginalised.

So I frequently feel left out when people are discussing, for example, the new Ben Stiller film, or the latest 'Saw' release as if these films will stand up to mean anything more than disposable cheap entertainment of no historical or intellectual value. It's sounds snobby, and it probably is, however those films just don't work for me as I can tell what they're all about in the first minutes, and then don't need to see anything else (in fact watching any further becomes an experiment in pain). I can count on one hand the amount of films from the past 10 years that I feel have some merit, whereas I need lots of hands to count the examples of great stirring films from yesterday. So please God, no more talk about Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, the Saw movies, or anything with Kiera Knightly... instead, let people come out of their idiot-bubbles and experience the greatness of such films as:

Long Day's Journey into Night (1962)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
All About Eve (1950)
The Red Shoes (1948)
Black Narcissus (1947)
Gone With The Wind (1939)
The Heiress (1949)
Dinner at Eight (1933)

The list goes on...

when i fall in love [Jan. 10th, 2010|01:04 pm]
ug. says the neandertallic man during his early afternoon odeal of trying to wake up.

I'm so tired. For no particular reason, I've had lots of sleep.

Anyway, I would like very much to make a lot of money this year. I'm reading all about investments and ISAs and such... which could partially account for why my brain has somehow become a molten mush today.

Other options for earning money on the side are:

Start an internet blog & make money with sponcored advertisements.
Become an Ebay seller, and make money with crap.
Become an extra and make money looking dumb.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?!

calypso spelled out in blossom [Jan. 6th, 2010|09:42 pm]
oh & I have finished reading the Montgomery Clift biography that I was bought for Christmas, and now I'm as much in love with him as ever - he is possibly the ultimate man for me - someone irrepairably damaged and therefore a viable project. This seems to be the colour of many of the people I have had crushes on in real life. haha.

I have also started reading Mary Wesley's biography, which in itself is a fascinating read. I find I greatly admire the shift in values amongst the upper classes in wartime. The fact that she was outwardly a very well-to-do lady of the ruling classes in her early life, but secretly was a bit of a whore & got to the point where she'd wake up and have difficulty recalling how many men she'd slept with the night before whilst her husband was busy doing ARP fascinates me. I adore the 'anything goes' mentality, and the actual quite logical rationalisation of their behaviour, the fact that nothing shocked them, and everything untoward that was occuring was basically accepted without question, and usually with a smile - for example the wife who had influence with MI5 ensuring that her husband's leave from active service in the army was delayed so she could prolongue an affair she was having greatly amuses me.

I was born into the wrong era. Not that I advocate the behaviour, but I certainly admire the attitude. People get so het up about ridiculous things these days.

working for the church [Jan. 4th, 2010|12:56 pm]
[mood | good]

aaaaah. my work is done. turns out that my start date is actually tomorrow, which is good. So this is my final day of freedom until... well... forever. So I've run the errands I needed to run, tied up the loose ends, paid a very generous cheque from my grandad into my account, sent script to the bbc, and am now basking in my lunch.

Also on my way back from attempting to infiltrate my new office a day early, I stopped by the newsagents at the train station and bought a 'Gay Times', as I've decided I should at least attempt to be less homophobic & more gay in 2010 (I give it a week). It also happened to be the 'naked celebrity' edition, which elicited a very uncomfortable look from the male checkout person... Oh how I wanted to say 'They don't pay you to think, buster.'

Anyway, those of you who know me well, will know that I'm more 'neurotic about' rather than 'comfortable with' my looks, and that has always been the case. However my ego has had a couple of little boosts in quick succession, one of which was someone remarking that I looked like Tom Cruise, and someone else said I resembled Montgomery Clift, pre-car crash. Now clearly both of these are scandalous lies, however so long as they're making the effort to lie, I'm not going to discourage them. haha.

I am currently trying to think of something productive to do with the rest of my day. For now I shall smoke.

tra la la [Dec. 31st, 2009|12:44 pm]
[mood | happy]

Well I'm depressed to my very core after watching 'Tsunami: Caught on Camera' on 4OD about the boxing day Tsunami - great piece of filmmaking though. Wish I'd been on that production.

I missed 'Turn of the Screw' due to Reg visiting with new information from his Lawyer, so we spent last night sifting through that, and finding holes in the story ready for his court appearance in a couple of months - I swear, I missed my calling as a defense attorney. I shall however hope that it's on BBC Iplayer which is the best thing of all the best things*

(*only if it actually has Turn of the Screw available).

Reg brought his girlfriend Sarah along, who seemed lovely, although there were many points where I wanted to stab myself to death as in an attempt to make polite conversation Mom resorted to talking about how brilliant I am, how much wonderful stuff I have (big TV, 400 DVDs etc), how well read I am, and how I did brilliantly at Uni despite not applying myself in my final year.... As much as it's great to have a parent who's so proud of me, having all this stuff said to a near perfect stranger & the possibility that they go off and talk about how precocious we are as a family & that I'm an arrogant little mommie's boy is not the sort of first impression I like to make, especially when I feel the praise is not deserving...

That said, as with my previous post, Christmas, all in all, has been lovely (for me. haha).

The biggest surprise of all was just receiving a text from Missy... a very nice text actually. So now I have to think of something lovely to reply with. I'm glad that the friendship bridge is sort of under construction, however it's doubtful that we'll ever be as close as we were before.

Also got a text from the hot london chef guy... despite the fact we've only met once, about a year ago, its nice that this digital flirtation is still ongoing...

Anyway, I'm sure I've more to say, but as my cat is nudging me it's obvious that there's something he wants that he wants me to provide, so I'd better go before he sneazes on my laptop.

Oh & - god it's a gorgeous day.

george michael pretending to be straight in the 'last christmas' video = fucking hilarious. [Dec. 24th, 2009|11:00 am]
[music |the boys of the NYPD choir still singing galway bay.]

Morning all. I greet you today after the worst sleep ever. I had a crazy insomnia attack last night, and it meant that I was waking up every hour or so for long periods. It was hellish. Anyway, in between all this, I did have some lovely nostalgia dreams about university, which was nice.

Took my 90-something year old aunt out this morning to get some last minute bits and bobs, which was a scary experience due to all the snow and ice & her tiny little frail body - I held tightly on to her arm lest she should jackknife into the pavement, although that brought fears that she'd still slip, and i'd be left holding an amputated arm... luckily there were no slips or amputations.

right now i'm listening to 'Fairytale of New York', which is of course the best christmas song of all time with no exceptions. It's not really getting me in the mood for clearing snow off the drive, or cleaning out the car, but it does make me want to smoke more, which can't be a bad thing.

Are there any classic holiday movies or TV shows that you look forward to watching year after year? What are your all-time favorites? Are there any you simply can't stand?

So with all the noise I make about possibly having the best taste in films ever, it's interesting that at Christmas I love stuff like Die Hard... it IS a christmas film.

Other favourites include The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Home Alone.

But ok, it's not all that terrible, I love 'Scrooge' (Alister Sim version), and of course 'It's a Wonderful Life', which is just brilliant.

[mood |kasabian]

so, it's 3.30pm, and I'm just getting out of bed after surviving through the worst hangover ever. Last night was the most I've drunk in a single night all year, and every drink I got to experience a second time as they came hurtling back out of my mouth in to (and around) the toilet at 2.30ish this morning. Sexy.

Anyway, good night in the end (despite nearly dying trying to navigate down the hill to get to my ride).

As you can see, I've decided to get up. As much fun as lying in bed is, I have vital urgent pressing things to do like make a mix CD for my car...

...and other less pressing things like shout at the Inland Revenue for sending me a reminder for payment notice for a bill that was paid about four weeks ago. Stoopid!

the parody album [Dec. 20th, 2009|08:04 pm]
[mood | amused]

so for the first part of this post, I'm going to basically bum myself for my brilliant photoshop skills...

The challenge was to tidy up a disintegrating birth certificate from one of the elderly members of my family. So, tell me how great I am after you take a look at the before and after shots )

Impressive for a self-taught amateur... But not as impressive as an effort from last year when I was planning to make a local history film (just for fun) about the legend associated with a local ruin... The plan was to show what the Mansion would have looked like before it fell down (haha), so I had a crack at seeing what I could do using a picture I took. Bear in mind there are no pictures of this house in it's full glory except some random sketches from the 1600s. So, here's what it looks like at the moment:

after
Photobucket

And now here's my home-made version of what it looked like in the 1600s )

Quite nifty if I do say so (of course in the 1600s the big 'PETE' letters probably wouldn't have been there). Unfortunatley I've yet to make the film due to no time/money (well, more the money thing).

Anyway, weird day today. Spent the morning in the company of my Mom's Step-Mom, who, for the first few years of my life, I thought was Beelzebub with breasts. However she is has distictly become less evil with age. Plus she's having a real crap time of it lately, so I'm feeling slightly more compassionate. Slightly.

Prior to that, Mom asked me to dry/style her hair (yes folks, I'm occasionally that gay). So I duly agreed. Unfortunately I've lost the protective plate for the back of the hairdryer... and accentilly managed to get my Mom's hair sucked into the back & tangled in the fan thing - so eventually, not only did I give her a blow-dry and style, I also ended up having to give her a little trim.... oooops. hahaha.

Anyway, I'm currently very amused by Chris Moyles' Parody Album, which I acquired yesterday, much to my delight - his version of Britney Spears' 'Womanizer' was priceless... "Lorry Driver Lorry Lorry Driver You're a Lorry Driver, Oh, Lorry Driver, Oh, You're a Lorry Driver, Mister..." HAHAHA!

driving on the line [Dec. 17th, 2009|12:49 pm]
[mood | good]

well the interview is over. From 110 applications, I was one of the 7 finalists - it's like the X factor for capitalism. It went surprisingly well (i.e. I didn't vomit, have a panic attack, or shit myself... haha), primarily because I had plenty to say, got on well with them, and had done a lot of homework. Whether they think I have the necessary experience is another thing.

One thing I've noticed in interviews is that I tend to ramble. For example, today they asked me to recount a tale of dealing with a difficult person. I told the story of when I was 17 and working in travel at the weekends, and had a regular business client, married, and in his early 60s who was difficult to please. But over the course of various bookings he warmed to me, eventually setting me up with Theatre contacts, and arranging a meeting at his friends house (he worked in the theatre), to help with my arts/media career.... And I went on for ages about that.

However, what I neglected to tell the interviewers was that at this meeting at the friends house, to my surprise, they put on a porn video, and tried to double-team me in the living room... Somehow saying "We established a good working relationship, whilst he was trying to groom me," didn't quite feel beneficial... hahaha.

Anyway, after a stupidly early start, I'm quite happily looking forward to a day of mindless tedium.

Writer's Block: Honesty is such a lonely word [Dec. 17th, 2009|12:39 pm]
[Tags|]

Do you think honesty is really the best policy when it comes to relationships? Is total honesty possible, let alone desirable?

Submitted By [info]ryokimayuu

Total honesty shouldn't be possible. Society would break down. Demanding total honesty in a relationship implies that there is a lack of trust that your partner will make the right choices for you as a couple. People must be given that freedom, they must also have the freedom to conceal certain things that they feel are personal. It does not necessarily mean that it will be detrimental to the relationship, and you should have faith that it isn't. When it comes to the important stuff (the make or break stuff), then I would say honesty sooner rather than later is better... but generally, people should be allowed to function as individuals...

...I know I don't always practice what I preach, but I believe in it in principle.
